BFI Gallery Launch: Simon Faithfull

Gravity sucks originates from artist Simon Faithful's exasperated realisation that "other things around him can fly, but he can't”. His extensive study of defying gravity comes together at the BFI Gallery, where for the first time his complete series of ‘Escape Vehicles’ are on display.

These quixotic artworks utilise an assortment of balloons, insects and rockets to offer the viewer the idea of freeing themselves from the constraints of gravity.

Vehicle number 6 strikes a particularly chilling tone: as a domestic chair floats through the upper atmosphere we observe a journey to empty space until disintegration begins.
