John Akomfrah in Conversation

In conjunction with the exhibition of his film Mnemosyne in the BFI Southbank Gallery, John Akomfrah shared an onstage conversation with Colin Prescod about his project, which was realised as part of the Made in England initiative developed by the Arts Council and BBC English Regions. For the work John Akomfrah was given access to the BBC archives (television, sound, and film) in order to explore his personal thoughts on migration and memory. Akomfrah points out here that his interest in constructing narratives about issues of identity and migration was derived from the lack of material depicting what it was like for African people to inhabit the Midlands in the 1960s to the 1980s. Akomfrah's artistic vision led to an assembly of stories, experiences and heterogeneous material as an effort to remap existing territory.
