Kwame Kwei - Armah on Hollywood Shuffle

When Kwame Kwei - Armah first saw Hollywood Shuffle in May 1987 he was astounded by Robert Townsend's decision to step behind the camera, finance and create his own films at a time when black acting talent was not embraced in Hollywood. Kwame Kwei - Armah also talks about the role models (Muhammad Ali, August Wilson, Malcolm X ) that deeply affected his political thinking and identity, and about how people of his generation were enabled to break into mainstream culture. This event, hosted by BFI Southbank Artistic Director Eddie Berg, formed part of the Screen Epiphanies strand for BFI members.
