Trevor Johnston on Hepburn and Tracy

As the BFI presents a nine-film retrospective of one of cinema’s most beloved couples - Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn - author and expert Trevor Johnston examines the contrasts in both personality and technique that created such intoxicating chemistry. As well as looking at the secrecy with which the couple’s off-screen life was managed, Johnston discusses how the intricacy of the stars’ performances developed, and makes a case for how the pair’s influence can still be felt in modern iterations of the romantic comedy genre.
