Supporting UK film

The BFI supports film culture across the UK. This includes investing Lottery funds in film development and production, and to increase audiences.

We aim to maximise the achievements of British film at home and abroad – from international strategy and industry diversity to certification and tax relief.

  • BFI Film Fund

We use National Lottery funds to develop and support original UK filmmakers and films, and to increase the audiences who can enjoy them.

  • Production and development funding

We provide support for the production, development and completion of feature films which fairly reflect people from different backgrounds.

  • Distribution and exhibition funding

We support high-quality British and independent releases, increase film choice for audiences and offer a springboard for UK film exports.

  • Diversity

As the lead body for film, the BFI represents contemporary Britain – in the films we fund and show, their audiences, and the filmmakers, actors and crews who make them.

  • Skills and business development funding

Schemes for investment in skills, business development, research and digitisation.

  • International strategy

Helping UK film achieve maximum economic growth and cultural reach.

  • British certification and tax relief

Find out how to qualify your film, video game, high-end television programme or animation programme as British to access tax reliefs.

  • Search for Lottery awards

Search our database for funding awards made by the BFI since April 2011.

  • BFI distribution

We hire out films for theatrical, non-theatrical and educational screenings in cinemas and other venues across the UK and internationally.
