Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s critically acclaimed and award-winning wuxia martial arts film The Assassin is now on release on Blu-ray and DVD from StudioCanal.
Adapted from a traditional Chinese folk tale of a young girl raised as a killer, the film transports the viewer into a lavish spectacle of intrigue, love, honour and power in Tang-dynasty China. Starring Hou regular actress Shu Qi, the film has been praised for its vivid beauty as well as its complex and compelling female heroine. It was named the best film of 2015 in Sight & Sound’s annual end-of-year poll.
We have a top prize of the film on Blu-ray along with a volume of critical appreciation and interviews with Hou Hsiao-Hsien edited by Richard Suchenski, a signed poster of the director and two bonus Asian Cinema titles from StudioCanal: Akira Kurosawa’s 1985 King Lear adaptation Ran, and Diao Yinan’s 2014 Berlinale Golden Bear winner Black Coal, Thin Ice.
Two runners up will receive the film, a poster and the two further StudioCanal films.
The closing date is 7 July 2016.
This competition is open to UK residents only.
